4/21 Heavy Pedal: Set up blogs, planning meeting

1.  Create a blog to document our design process.  Your grade for this project will be based upon your reflection of the design process (blog entries) and your participation in the project.  Both will count for 50% of your grade.

2.  Blog post #1 (from last week)

a) Explain the challenge that was presented to you.  (What were you asked to do?)

b) Explain the solution.  (What are we making?)

3.  Head to the Makerspace!

4/20 Rube Goldberg planning, round 2

1.  Head down to the Makerspace to see what your Rube Goldberg machine must be fastened to.

2.  Brainstorming session, round 2:  
  • How will you get your original design on the 4' x 4' plywood stand?  
  • What changes might you need to make, if any?
  • Will you need to build shelves?  Where?
  • Draw a picture of your new design
3.  Write Blog post #3:  Answer the questions from the brainstorming session above.  Include a picture of your new design.

4.  At this point you should have 3 blog posts.  At the end of the week, I will grade your blog.  This will be "Blog check-in #1"  

Take some time to ensure that your blog posts are complete and contain good grammatical structure.

5.  Turn in you blog (I just need the URL) by completing this form.

4/14 First day of Level 3! (A-day)

Rube Goldberg

1.  Watch some videos for inspiration
2.  Introduction to our project:
  • Teams of 3-4 on a small workspace (consider building up and down)
  • At least 5 mechanisms per team
  • Must figure out a way to attach all team's mechanisms together
  • Use skills you have learned this year in STEAM
3.  Create teams of diverse skill sets.  Please fill out this Google Form.

4.  Create a blog.  50% of your grade will be based on your reflections on your blog!  (25% participation and teamwork, 25% project outcome)


5.  Brainstorming session
  • Create a list of supplies that you might need
  • Draw or write down ideas for different mechanisms
  • Draw or write down ideas for how to get the mechanisms to work together
6.  Share ideas.  There are no bad ideas!  Listen to others.  Build off of one idea to make an even better one.

7.  Come up with a group plan.  By the end of the class period you must submit a plan (with a drawing) of what you intend to make.

8.  Make a list of necessary supplies.  Add your supplies to this Google Form.  Only submit one time per group.

9.  Your blog post for today:
  • How did your brainstorming session go?  What were some successes? Any failures?
  • Explain your project plan.  What supplies will you need?
  • Include pictures of your project plan and artifacts from brainstorming

  • Design Thinking: Shopping Cart
  • Teams of 2 working on a component of the project
  • Leadership roles
    • President: Oversees the project. Helps create student-teams.  Plans daily meetings.
    • Vice President: Checks in with student-teams. Sets project deadlines.
    • Secretary: Creates Google Forms and shared docs.  Types up meeting notes on shared document.
    • Scribe: Takes notes on the whiteboard.  Takes pictures to document our progress.  Fills in for Secretary when absent.
